What HEIC actually is
HEIC is a file extension commonly used for images stored in the HEIF family of formats. Apple devices popularized it as a default photo format because it can store high-quality images efficiently and can support richer image information than a basic JPG workflow.
That efficiency is useful on phones where people may capture thousands of photos. The problem appears later when a file leaves the environment that understands it well. A hiring portal, older Windows application, website upload form, print kiosk, or messaging workflow may expect JPG or PNG instead.
When you should keep HEIC
If your devices and applications already support HEIC, there is no need to convert every photo automatically. Keeping the original preserves the source file and avoids an unnecessary generation of another compressed copy.
HEIC can be a good master for a personal photo library when your ecosystem supports it. Conversion is better treated as a compatibility step: create another version when a destination needs one.
HEIC to JPG: the common compatibility conversion
JPG is usually the most practical target when the HEIC file is a normal photograph. JPG works across an enormous range of websites, devices, office applications, social tools, and older software. The output may be easier to upload, email, insert into documents, or send to someone who does not use the same device ecosystem.
Because JPG is lossy, the selected quality level matters. A high-quality setting can preserve a visually strong result, but converting does not make the image “more original” than the HEIC source. Keep the HEIC if you may need the best available source later.
HEIC to PNG: use it for a specific reason
PNG is lossless and widely supported, but it can become much larger for photographic content. Converting a phone photo from HEIC to PNG simply because PNG sounds “higher quality” is often inefficient. The conversion cannot create details that were not already in the source.
PNG makes more sense if the next step is a graphics workflow that expects PNG, if you need lossless saves during editing, or if transparency will be introduced later. For ordinary photo sharing, JPG is generally simpler.
What about metadata and special phone features?
Photo files can contain metadata such as capture time, camera information, orientation, color information, and location. Modern phone photo systems can also associate still images with additional data or related media. Converting to a simpler format may not preserve every piece of that information.
If metadata, color fidelity, depth information, or a special camera feature matters to you, do not delete the original after conversion. Treat the JPG or PNG as a delivery copy.
Why some HEIC files fail in browser converters
HEIC support depends on the codec capabilities available in the conversion engine. Different HEIF/HEIC files can use different features and profiles, so recognizing the file extension is not the same as guaranteeing that every file can be decoded.

A safe HEIC workflow
- Keep the original HEIC in your photo library.
- Create JPG copies for general sharing and compatibility.
- Use PNG only when a lossless graphics workflow actually benefits from it.
- Check important metadata after conversion if it matters to your use case.
- Do not assume a converted copy contains every feature associated with the original phone photo.
Good default: keep HEIC as the source and convert copies only for destinations that do not handle HEIC well.
